Is it necessary to have a wedding reception entrance for the bridal party?

We are not going to have a DJ, but a live jazz combo at our reception. The lead singer of this combo is a friend of mine from college. I don't know if it would look good if I asked him to do the wedding entrance intros for everybody or just have my friend who has DJ experience do it using an iPod for the music just as a quick thing. Or is it acceptable to not have a bridal party entrance? I have never been to a wedding where they didn't do this. Even the most upscale weddings I've been in or at have had the entrance. Thoughts?
