Are emo kids just cross dressing?

A guy at my work was trying to explain his emo lifestyle to me. He wears makeup and women's clothes and is about as slim as my girlfriend. He listens to boy bands like hawthorne heights and very femenine music. I know emo is slang for emotional but this seems like more of an imitation of goth but with a more '' vibe. I am quite sure he is gay and/or cross dressing. Is this what kids do to be cool these days? I am sure if someone dressed like a ual or girl when i was in high school they would have gotten stoned to death.
